Ayurveda, translated in Sanskrit as the “Science of Life,” is an ancient healing system developed and passed down orally over 5,000 years ago in India, and eventually recorded in the Vedic texts. Although suppressed during years of foreign occupation, Ayurveda is experiencing a major resurgence today, especially with the unprecedented rise of chronic disease, and the growing consciousness that many of these “diseases of excess” are preventable, as well as treatable, through diet and lifestyle changes. Ayurveda incorporates daily and seasonal routines, along with dietary, lifestyle, herbal and cleansing regimens to achieve optimal health and balance to mind, body and spirit.
Nutritious food is a celebration of life, capable of enlivening your vitality and engaging all your senses. Unfortunately, due to the hectic pace of modern life, eating is more of a hassle and used more to refuel rather than a means to celebrate. And the faster the better! We seem to have lost our way with food. We don’t know what to eat anymore. With foods being glorified one week and demonized the next, it’s no wonder there is now so much anxiety around food. We can walk into a grocery store a have our pick of any kind of food we want at any time of year. We can get watermelon in the middle of winter! It has gotten complicated and confusing. Ayurveda teaches us that the food we eat carries the wisdom of the earth, the intelligence of the farmer, and the love of the cook. Every nourishing meal is a celebration of the seasons, cycles, and rhythms of nature. Lovingly prepared food renews, revitalizes, and can heal, and nurture your body, your mind, and your spirit. Food is God. It is literally creating you
“My Ayurvedic journey and path to healing began after my first colonoscopy, at age 53, where I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and diverticulosis. The Western Dr. said to me in the follow up that I would have to take medication, that had a list of side effects as long as my arm, for the rest of my life and it would not heal me, just manage my condition. I was not willing to settle for that, so I sought Aurvedic treatment. The first thing I was given was a diet plan specific to me and my condition (the western Dr. did not give me any type of diet plan or restrictions), along with herbs and lifestyle adjustments. Within a week I could feel the difference and at the one month mark my intestinal pain/symptoms had disappeared. After two months my joint pain and allergies had lessened which was a bonus as I was just seeking a treatment for UC/Diverticulosis. It has been 2 years since I have started on the Ayurvedic way of life and I continue to feel great and have no UC/Diverticulosis symptoms. It has changed my life!“

“I wanted to share one story of how your online yoga class has helped me (although there are many) during the pandemic. I broke my finger about 4 years ago, and due to bad advice from doctors, it did not heal properly – after 12 months it was still so swollen that I could not wear my wedding ring, and it was in a permanent state of being bent due to lack of mobility for such a long period of time. It was so bad, that even my pinky finger started to swell from lack of use and eventually developed a permanent bend in one of that finger’s joints too! Enter the pandemic, and the incredible opportunity to take your yoga classes via Zoom on a regular basis. I had learned, through 18 months of physical therapy on my fingers, that deep breathing and gentle massage to my arm, hands and fingers would help with the swelling, and that forced physical exercise for my finger would create more mobility – and all of these worked, but only to a point. After 18 months, my physical therapist told me that my fingers were probably as good as they were going to get. I was disappointed; I still could not get my wedding ring over my swollen joint (our jeweler told us we would have to get the ring re-sized, but I was too stubborn to agree to that). Over the past year of taking your yoga classes regularly, your intentional breathing throughout the 1.5 hours of each class and inclusion of hand and wrist exercises each time, have improved my fingers dramatically! I bet you never knew how important those fist opening and closing exercises were to me! I am now able to bend my finger sufficiently enough to open jars, grasp a golf club firmly enough to play again, and hold a blow-dryer in my left hand. Additionally, the swelling in both fingers is completely gone and I’ve been wearing my wedding ring again now for several months! While I still have a slight permanent bend in both fingers, it is barely noticeable, and certainly does not prevent me from having typical lifestyle mobility. I KNOW for a fact that your yoga classes were the reason for these improvements.
I had to laugh a few weeks ago when you taught a class that was specifically focused on our hands. I wanted to share my finger story with you right then and there, letting you know that your classes already help that area of our bodies so much!
So, thank you for sharing your talents, wisdom and knowledge with the rest of the world! You have no idea what a difference you are making in so many of our lives.”
